Cold, flu and RSV season is already ramping up. What’s the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones this year? Below are answers to that question, straight from the experts.
Do I need a flu shot?
Everyone ages 6 months and older should get a flu shot. This year’s vaccine has been updated to target the latest strains, including influenza A (H3N2) — a version that caused severe illness in recent seasons. An annual vaccination remains your best protection, especially for older adults or those with chronic conditions.
Do I need the RSV shot?
Possibly. Recommendations for the RSV vaccine have recently expanded:
All adults 75 and older should get it.
Adults ages 50-74 should consider it if they’re at increased risk, which includes those with heart or lung disease, diabetes, weakened immune systems or anyone living in long-term care facilities.
The RSV vaccine is not annual — most adults will only need a single dose.
A word about the COVID vaccine
A new COVID-19 vaccine, designed to protect against the latest variants, is expected this fall. We’re waiting on final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and updated guidance from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices on who should get it. Once we know more, including whether it’ll be available at our flu shot events, we’ll share updates here.
Bottom line
Getting vaccinated can help you avoid serious illness this fall. And the cost to you is $0 because you’re covered by the Certificated Employee Health Plan.
If you’re unable to make our free flu shot events in September and October, you can:
Stop by the Kroger Pharmacy in the Employee Wellness Center. No appointment is necessary.
Make an appointment at any of the MNPS Health Care Centers at 615-259-8755 or here.
